When I traveled to Australia, I discovered a food that I really enjoyed: the sausage roll.
It’s not something very common in Japan, but in Australia, you can easily find sausage rolls at bakeries and food markets. Rather than being a dish you eat with a knife and fork at a restaurant, it’s more like casual street food that you can grab and eat with one hand.
What is a sausage roll?
When I first saw it, I wondered, “Is there an actual sausage inside?” But it turned out to be different. Wrapped inside the puff pastry is a meat mixture similar to hamburger steak. The combination of the golden, crispy pastry and the juicy meat filling is simply perfect.
The classic way to enjoy it is with ketchup, and in Australia, people often eat it as a snack when they’re feeling a little hungry.
Easy to make at home!
The good news is, sausage rolls are easy to recreate at home using ingredients you can find at a Japanese supermarket. By using frozen puff pastry, you can cut down on prep time—just mix ground meat with your favorite herbs, spices, and onions, wrap it, and bake it in the oven. It looks fancy but is surprisingly easy to make, which makes it great for home parties or when you want to serve something special.

Ground beef & pork mix | 350g |
【For the meat mixture】 | |
Onion | 1/4 |
Egg | 1 |
Breadcrumbs | 4 tbsp |
Milk | 1 tbsp |
Mayonnaise | 1 tbsp |
Miso | 1 tbsp |
Salt & black pepper | 5 shakes |

How to Make
1⃣ Prep
Finely chop the onion. Defrost the puff pastry.

2⃣ Make the filling
In a bowl, combine the ground meat with all the ingredients listed under “meat mixture.” Mix well by hand (use kitchen gloves if you like).

3⃣ Wrap with pastry
Cut a puff pastry sheet in half. Place the meat mixture in the center and roll it up.
Tip: sprinkle some flour underneath to keep the pastry from sticking.

4⃣ Prepare the oven
If using a baking sheet, line it with parchment paper. If using a rack, grease it with oil. Preheat oven to 200°C (392°F).

5⃣ Finishing touches
Cut each roll in half. Brush the top with egg yolk and sprinkle sesame seeds.

6⃣ Bake
Bake in the preheated oven (200°C/392°F) for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
