I fell in love with aonori (green seaweed flakes) after eating seaweed-salt flavored fries at a festival. That’s what inspired this recipe.
These crispy fried octopus bites are packed with flavor—savory, garlicky, and full of umami from the soy sauce and seaweed. They’re one of my all-time favorites!
Ingredients
Boiled octopus | 200g |
Soy sauce | 1 tbsp |
Sake | 1 tbsp |
Garlic paste | 1 tsp |
Potato starch | Plenty |
Aonori (green seaweed flakes) | About 4 shakes |
Neutral oil (like rice bran oil) | Enough for frying |
Lemon | 1/4 |
How to Make
1⃣ Prep
Cut the lemon into wedges.
Cut the octopus into bite-size pieces (about 1–2 cm) and pat dry with a paper towel.

2⃣ Marinate
In a ziplock bag or bowl, combine soy sauce, sake, and garlic. Add the octopus and let it marinate in the fridge for about 10 minutes.

3⃣ Coat
Mix the potato starch with aonori. Coat the marinated octopus generously in the mixture.

4⃣ Fry
Heat oil to 180°C (350°F). Fry the octopus for about 2 minutes in small batches (about 3 batches for 200g total).

I don’t drink alcohol, but I love savory bar snacks like this. I usually drink lemon water (just lemon juice with water) while eating fried food—it’s refreshing and doesn’t feel too heavy.
