A Middle Eastern breakfast dish made with simple ingredients from your local supermarket!
I was recommended this dish, and it’s now one of my favorite easy breakfasts!
The warm flavor of cumin and the aroma of garlic go perfectly with toasted bread — it’s seriously delicious.
If you’re looking for a twist on your usual toast, give this breakfast a try!

Onion | 1/4 |
Garlic | 1 clove |
Canned diced tomatoes | 200g (7 oz) |
Egg | 1 or 2 |
Cumin powder | 3 shakes |
Paprika powder | 3 shakes |
Chili powder (optional if you don’t like spicy food) | 3 shakes |
Brown sugar (or regular sugar) | 1 tsp |

How to Make
1⃣ Prep the ingredients
Finely chop the onion and garlic.

2⃣ Sauté the aromatics
Heat 1 tsp of olive oil in a skillet or small frying pan.
Add the garlic and onion and sauté until translucent.

3⃣ Simmer the sauce
Add the diced tomatoes, cumin, paprika, and chili powder.
Simmer for about 5 minutes.
Taste and adjust with salt, sugar, and pepper if needed.

4⃣ Add the eggs and cheese
Make small wells in the sauce and crack in the eggs.
Add cheese on top if desired.
Cover with a lid and cook on low heat until the eggs are done to your liking.

I bought the cumin and paprika at a local supermarket in Japan.
The chili powder I used was cayenne pepper purchased in the U.S., but feel free to skip it if you’re sensitive to spice.
I highly recommend dipping toasted bread into the shakshuka — the crispy toast and flavorful sauce are an amazing combo!
