Homemade Tartar Sauce for Fish and Chips
I made this tartar sauce when I cooked fish and chips at home. The refreshing taste of lemon and pickles pairs so well with fried food that I ended up eating way too much late at night… I made this using Kewpie mayonnaise, but feel free to use your favorite mayo! I think this sauce would go well not only with fried fish but also with fried squid, shrimp, sandwiches, and hot dogs. Give it a try with different foods and see what you like best!
Ingredients
Mayonnaise (Kewpie) | 2 tbsp |
Relish(Sanyo) | 1 tbsp |
Fresh dill | 5 pinches |
Lemon | 1/8 |
Brown sugar | 1/2 tsp |
Grainy mustard (Maille) | 1 tsp |
Black pepper | 1 shake |
Sour cream | 1 tsp |
(I’ve listed the brands I used, but you can use any brand you like.)
How to Make
Finely chop the dill and mix all the ingredients together.

When I was in Australia, I bought fish and chips from a seafood shop that sold them like a street stall. Most people either ate them standing there or took them to a park, but I decided to take mine home on the bus. Some Australian high school students on the bus said, “It smells like fish and chips!” and I felt so embarrassed that I wished I had just eaten them in the park! But honestly, they were just as delicious when I enjoyed them at home. Next time, I want to go to the UK and have real fish and chips with malt vinegar!
