Garlic rice, perfect for meat dishes like chicken adobo. In the Philippines, garlic rice is usually stir-fried with a lot of oil, but I made it with less oil and cooked it without frying, giving it a gentle taste with a garlic flavor that is sure to whet your appetite.
Ingredients
Rice | 2 cups(about 300g / 10.6 oz) |
Garlic | 3 cloves |
Soy sauce(Kikkoman) | 1 tbsp |
Salt | a small amount |
Olive oil | a small amount |
How to Make
1⃣ Slice 3 cloves of garlic thinly. If there is a sprout in the center, remove it. (Wearing cooking gloves will prevent your hands from smelling.)

2⃣ Heat olive oil and sauté all the thinly sliced garlic over low heat. (Be careful as it can burn easily!)

3⃣ After about 5 minutes, when the garlic turns golden brown, turn off the heat and remove the garlic from the pan. Place it on a paper towel. (It will be used as garlic chips to top the rice at the end.)

4⃣ Add 2 cups of rice to the pan, then add 200ml of water, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and some salt. Mix in the garlic-flavored olive oil.

5⃣ Transfer the rice and water to a clay pot or rice cooker, and add water up to the 2-cup line for the rice.

6⃣ Cook the rice for the usual amount of time.

7⃣ Finally, scoop the rice into a bowl, invert it onto a plate, and top with the garlic chips for an Asian-inspired touch!

I was advised by Filipinos that garlic rice pairs well with Filipino dishes, but since I wanted a healthier, less greasy rice, I decided to make my own version. It went really well with chicken adobo (a braised chicken dish) and was delicious.
I once went alone to a Filipino restaurant in Tokyo, and the entire restaurant, including the customers, was filled with Filipinos! When I talked to the staff in Japanese, they were surprised that a Japanese person come to their restaurant! The food wasn’t served like a typical set meal for each person, and each dish was so large that I couldn’t order many, but it was so tasty!! Next time, I want to go with a group and share various delicious Filipino dishes and garlic rice with everyone!!

If it looks delicious, feel free to share it on Twitter/X! And if you try making it, I’d be even happier if you tag me in your post!
